Ugetsu

Ugetsu is a 1953 Japanese film directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, drawn from two stories in Ueda Akinari's collection of the same name. It is set in Ōmi during the civil wars of the sixteenth century. Genjūrō, a potter, takes his wares to town to profit from the fighting and is drawn into the household of a woman named Wakasa, whom he only later understands to be a ghost. His brother-in-law Tōbei buys armour and passes off a stolen trophy to be made a samurai, and finds on his rise that his wife has been forced into prostitution. Genjūrō returns home to find his wife at the hearth, and learns the next morning that she was killed by soldiers some time before. The film works largely in long takes and moving camera; a passage across a misted lake carries a change of place and time entirely through staging on the water. It received the Silver Lion at Venice.
