Touch of Evil

Touch of Evil is a 1958 American film directed by Orson Welles, produced by Universal, with Charlton Heston as Ramon Vargas, a Mexican narcotics official, and Welles as Hank Quinlan, an American police captain. A timed device detonates in a car as it crosses the border into a small town, and the police forces of both countries become involved; Vargas establishes that Quinlan has been securing convictions by planting evidence. The film opens with a continuous shot of about three minutes that begins as the device is placed in the car and follows it through the streets and the border checkpoint until it explodes. Universal recut the film after delivery and shot additional material; a version following the memorandum Welles wrote at the time was assembled in 1998.
