Introduction

The Red Shoes is a 1948 British film written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, with Moira Shearer as the dancer Victoria Page, Anton Walbrook as the impresario Lermontov, and Marius Goring as the composer Julian Craster. It draws on Hans Christian Andersen's tale of the same name. Page joins Lermontov's company and dances the lead in a new ballet built on that story, then marries Craster, and Lermontov requires her to choose between the marriage and the company. The ballet sequence at the centre runs about seventeen minutes, with sets that change during the dance and effects including superimposition and stop-motion. Jack Cardiff photographed it in Technicolor. The film received Academy Awards for Art Direction and for its score.
