Introduction

On the Waterfront is a 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan, produced by Columbia, with Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy, a former boxer working on the docks, Rod Steiger as his brother Charley, and Eva Marie Saint as Edie. It is set on the waterfront at Hoboken, New Jersey, where the union is controlled by racketeers and those who testify against them are killed. Terry works for them at the outset and later gives evidence before a crime commission. The film was shot on location in Hoboken. Leonard Bernstein wrote the score, his only one for a film not adapted from a stage work. Kazan had testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee two years earlier and named others, and the film is frequently discussed in that light. It received eight Academy Awards, among them Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
