Floating Clouds

Floating Clouds is a 1955 Japanese film directed by Mikio Naruse, produced by Toho, with Hideko Takamine as Yukiko Koda and Masayuki Mori as Kengo Tomioka, adapted from the novel by Fumiko Hayashi. The two meet during the war at a forestry station in French Indochina, where Tomioka is already married. After the defeat Yukiko seeks him out in Tokyo, and over the following years they separate and reunite repeatedly: borrowing money, quarrelling, taking up with other people. They travel together to Yakushima, where Yukiko falls ill and dies. The film is set largely in the lodging houses and depleted streets of the postwar city, and offers no reversal; the characters' circumstances decline steadily from scene to scene. It was placed first in Kinema Junpo's annual critics' poll.
