Battleship Potemkin

Battleship Potemkin is a 1925 Soviet silent film directed by Sergei Eisenstein, commissioned for the twentieth anniversary of the 1905 revolution. It is in five parts and draws on the mutiny aboard the Potemkin in the Black Sea Fleet that year: the sailors refuse rations they consider rotten, the officers order the ringleaders shot, the guard detail refuses, and the mutiny follows. The people of Odessa come to the harbour in support, and Tsarist troops fire on them on the steps leading down to it. That sequence is assembled from rapid cutting and includes a pram running loose down the stairs. Eisenstein used the film to put his arguments about the collision of shots into practice. It was banned for a time in several countries.
