Introduction
Apocalypse Now is a 1979 American film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by American Zoetrope, with Martin Sheen as Captain Willard, Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz and Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore. The screenplay takes Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as its basis and relocates it to the Vietnam War: Willard is ordered upriver into Cambodia to find and kill Kurtz, an officer who has left the chain of command and established a base of his own. Shooting took place in the Philippines over roughly sixteen months, during which a typhoon destroyed sets, Sheen suffered a heart attack, and Coppola guaranteed the overruns against his own property. Three versions of differing length exist. The film received the Palme d'Or at Cannes and Academy Awards for cinematography and sound.
