Stanley Kubrick

American director, 1928–1999. He worked as a staff photographer for Look magazine in his teens and moved into film in the 1950s, completing thirteen features. From the 1960s he lived in England and shot almost everything there. He worked across war, science fiction, horror and period subjects, spending long periods in preparation on each.
Career
Kubrick photographed for Look magazine as a teenager and financed his first shorts and features himself. Paths of Glory in 1957 and Spartacus in 1960 brought him into the studio system; Spartacus was the only one of his films over which he did not hold final cut. He moved to England in 1961 and shot everything afterwards there.
His subjects ranged across war, black comedy, science fiction, costume drama and horror, while his output slowed to roughly one film every five to seven years. A Clockwork Orange was withdrawn from British distribution at his own request and not shown again until 2000, the year after his death. He won a single Academy Award, for the visual effects of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
