Ruan Lingyu

Chinese actor, 1910–1935. She entered the industry at sixteen and appeared in twenty-nine films, among them The Goddess and New Women. She took her own life in March 1935 at twenty-four; the funeral drew enormous crowds, and Lu Xun wrote an essay on the affair.
